Let’s work together to keep our children safe in school!
A Faithful Response to Gun Violence
We know that students can’t learn and teachers can’t teach if they aren’t safe in school. What does our faith call us to do to increase school safety? During the annual meeting of the United Church of Christ (UCC) General Synod 20, a resolution was unanimously passed calling upon all UCC members to work to end gun violence. In 2019, UCC members were strongly encouraged to “Advocate to End Gun Violence in Your Community” in an article of the same name.
With this in mind, the Deacons plan to reach out to our two local school superintendents asking them to communicate with parents about the importance of safely securing firearms in the home. We will be circulating a petition to gather names in support of this communication prior to meeting with the superintendents. We encourage all NCC members to sign the petition and to gather signatures from family, friends, and neighbors who live in New Hartford, Norfolk, Barkhamsted, and Colebrook. Copies of the petition can be downloaded here or can be picked up at church. Please mail (NCC, P.O. Box 307, New Hartford, CT 06057) or bring petitions to church by October 31.
